Intergenerational Christmas Resources

The Intergenerational Christmas Resources linked below will help you celebrate Christmas. There are resources for intergenerational worship and events, plus resources that you can share with household of all types. You can choose what Christmas resources will work for your congregation and households.

The Season of Christmas

Did you know that the season of Christmas goes for 12 days from the 25th Decemeber to 5th January? Of course many of the intergenerational Christmas Resources could be used in the lead up to Christmas. If you’re looking for Advent specific ideas then the Intergenerational Advent Resources page may be helpful. The Advent Resources page will also have ideas that are useful for the Christmas season.

Christmas Eve/Christmas Day Worship Ideas

Some Intergenerational Christmas Ideas we’ve tried

Over the years we have done many different things in our congregation to include all ages in our Christmas services, particularly the Christmas Eve service. Some of these intergenerational ideas have included:

  • Using a puppet play to tell the story. All ages were involved in making the puppets and performing the play
  • Mini musical with many ages involved in the singing and 2 young girls dancing.
  • Giving out Nativity Story stones (pictured right) as each part of the story was read & sung about. An intergenerational group could paint the stones before hand.
  • Using the Godly Play The Holy Family story on Christmas Day or the service on the Sunday after Christmas as it’s still the season of Christmas. With silent wondering or wondering in small groups.
Painted Nativity Story Stones

One of my favourite services from the last few years was one where we talked about the Christian symbolism in many of the decorations we use at Christmas. We started with a bare Christmas tree that we decorated together throughout the service as each symbol was discussed. Everyone was invited to choose 2 ornaments on arrival and add them to the tree after they were spoken about. Finally the lights were turned on as we celebrated Jesus the light of the world. The symbols we focussed on were:

  • The meaning of the word “Christmas”
  • Christmas Trees
  • Red & Green decorations
  • Bells
  • Wreath
  • Star
  • Candy Cane
  • Angels
  • Tinsel
  • Baubles
  • Gifts
  • Candle & Christmas Lights

If you reasearch these decorations you’ll find that many of them have interesting histories and symbolise different Christian ideas. Please contact me if you’d like to know more about this service or any of the other ideas we’ve done over the years.

Christmas Eve Service Family Packs

Family packs for the Christmas Eve service

Another local church contracted me to make Christmas Eve packs for families with activities to use in their service and at home. This Christmas Eve pack contained:

  • instructions and ideas sheet
  • scratch paper star and angel ornaments with a stick to stratch patterns during the service or at home
  • biscuits with choc buds and icing sugar and instructions to make sheep biscuits as you retell the story from Luke 2
  • biscuits with a jelly baby, a roll-up and coconut to make Baby Jesus biscuits to remind you that God is with us.

Family Christmas Traditions Workshop

This Family Christmas Traditions Workshops is based on my chapter in Hope for the Holidays. I’ll share some of our families Christmas Traditions and then parents/families will have an opportunity to explore how they might adapt existing traditions and add a faith-based element to them. Or they might consider adding a new faith-based tradition to their Advent/Christmas celebrations.

In a Family Christmas Traditions Workshop parents will learn how they can:

  • add faith-based elements to their existing family traditions for the season
  • create new faith-based family traditions
  • tweak or change these family traditions as their family grows and changes.

This workshop can be run with parents or with families together.

This workshop could be run in person at your church (in the Brisbane area) or online. Visit my workshops page to find out more about workshops or contact me to explore the possibility of running a workshop with the parents/families in your faith community.

Alternatively, I’m offering an online Family Christmas Traditions Workshop on Tuesday 25th November, 2025 at 1pm (AEST). Please feel free to share this with any families who may be interested. Please note that this online Zoom session will not be recorded as it will be interactive.
