There are probably more ideas for celebrating Mother’s Day then Father’s Day, particularly as a church community. However, you choose to celebrate this day within your faith community there is always the need to be mindful of those for whom this day is hard.

Here in Australia we celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May. In the UK Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent. Mothering Sunday was originally about people returning to their “mother church” where they were baptised or nurtured in faith.
Celebrating Mother’s Day as a Church
For many years there was a lady in our church who made a little gift for all the women in the church on Mother’s Day. The gift was usually something like nice soap, a flower or some other little gift. All the women received the gift she’d organised whether or not they were mothers. It was also the tradition for many years for the men of the church to bring and serve morning tea on Mother’s Day.
One year the men of the church organised a Mother’s Day breakfast which took place before the service that day. Mother’s of all ages attended with the men preparing the food and serving us. Some of the father’s of younger children helped by caring for their children whilst their wife attended the breakfast, like my husband. This was an opportunity to invite other women who may not normally attend church. I brought my mother and my cousin’s partner, neither of whom attended church regularly at that stage.
You might choose to focus all or just part of the service on Mother’s Day. Or you might hold some sort of Mother’s Day event outside of your normal worship service.
